Story of the Month

July 2006

The Needle in the Hay Field

One day, Tayler the Wanderer was hungry.

He found an enchanted talking goat.

"You there goat. I am very hungry." said Tayler the Wanderer, "Where might an adventurer like me find some grub."

"Come closer." said the goat, "BAA!"

"Why did you yell in my ear?" asked Tayler the Wanderer.

"It was a test." said the talking goat, "Just kidding. I wanted to have some fun, people hardly ever come here anymore.... I am lonely."

"Ummm anyway's, back to where I can get some food." said Tayler

"To the north! THE NORTH!" screamed the goat!

"Over in that direction?" asked Tayler.

"Yeah...yeah that's about it, whatever." said the goat who was trying to nibble off the wanderer's finger.

Tayler the Wanderer walked for many hours. With each passing minute, he got hungrier and hungrier.

Tayler the wanderer did not see any kind of pub anywhere.

So he decided to climb up that little hill to have a look around.

When he got to the top he did not see a pub, he saw a sleeping giant!

Tayler the wanderer tried to make it down the little hill quietly, but the sleeping giant awoke.

"Urrrrgaaa!" stretched the giant.

"Eek!" eeked the wanderer.

The giant hadn't noticed Tayler the Wanderer until he eeked. He reached down to grab the horrified traveler.

Tayler the Wanderer was not fast enough to get away.

Tayler was snatched up quicker than a hawk getting a rabbit.

"What do you want with me?" asked Tayler.

Then the giant said "Hmm... any other day I would eat you like a piece of mutton but I already ate a piece of mutton. "

Tayler started to feel ill at ease.

"Then what service might I do for you?" inquired the frightened wanderer.

So the giant said "I have lost a very dear magic needle of mine in a hay field to the north. Find it, bring it back, and I will not crush you."

" Yes sir!" said Tayler the wanderer.

The giant set Tayler the Wanderer down rather roughly and ordered him to get going.

"I'm never going to get a meal now." thought the starving wanderer, "I must continue on and find the giant's magic needle, otherwise I will probably not live to eat another meal anyways."

Tayler the Wanderer pondered where he should begin searching for the needle.

Tayler the Wanderer searched and searched, but to no avail.

He kept his eye on the ground at all times.

The search went on for many days.

Tayler the Wanderer ate nothing but moldy bread and a handful of dried berries. These meager portions did nothing to fill his belly and made him long for a good meal even more.

Tayler the Wanderer started to hallucinate, he started seeing needles everywhere.

The hay kept on getting thicker and thicker, making the search very difficult.

On the 17th day of the search, Tayler the Wanderer gave up.

"The only way one could find a needle in here is with an army, and I don't have one of those." Tayler thought to himself, "I guess that I will have to hide from that giant for the rest of my life."

He gave the search one last try.

"Any needles here?" he said aloud.

"Gah! No needle." said the frustrated wanderer.

Tayler the Wanderer was walking when he felt something pierce his foot.

He looked down and saw that there was a piece of metal sticking out of his boot.

It hurt alot.

He lifted his foot up and pulled the piece of metal out of his foot.

"WHO IS THE STUPID PERSON THAT LEFT THIS IN THE MIDDLE OF A HAY FIELD FOR ANYBODY TO STEP ON!" yelled the angry wanderer.

"Wait a second, this is the needle that I have been searching for all along!" said Tayler the Wanderer.

"I must bring this back to the giant immediately! exclaimed Tayler the Wanderer, "So he will spare my life."

Tayler the Wanderer marched back to the giant with haste.

"What are you doing here?" asked the giant.

"I have brought forth the magical needle that you requested from me!" yelled the triumphant wanderer.

"Let me see." said the giant.

The giant took the needle from Tayler the Wanderer and examined it.

"This isn't my magical needle." said the giant.

"This isn't your magical needle?" said Tayler the Wanderer.

"Nope, mine was more rusty." grumbled the giant.

Overcome with anger, Tayler the wanderer leapt forth and stabbed the giant in the foot.

He then ran as fast as he could in the opposite direction.

Luckily for Tayler the Wanderer, the giant did not like to be stabbed in the foot. He ran off into the distance balling his eyes out.

Tayler the Wanderer made his way back to the talking goat.

"Treacherous beast!" screamed Tayler the Wanderer, "You sent me to my death at the hands of a giant!"

"Spare me!" whimpered the goat, "I was forced to do it, otherwise the giant would have eaten me."

"Believe me, the giant is the least of your worries right now." said Tayler the wanderer.

Later that night, Tayler the Wanderer enjoyed a nice feast of roasted goat meat.

Tune in next month for another adventurous adventure!
